Mark Kleyn is a multifaceted professional, blending his interests of viola performance, sport psychology, and songwriting in a varied career. Born in Michigan, Mark received his Bachelors of Viola Performance from Western Michigan University, studying with Professor Igor Fedotov, and his Masters of Viola Performance at the University of Ottawa with Professor Rennie Regehr.
Mark has also earned an MA in Musicology from the University of Ottawa, focusing his research on the application of sport psychology to performing musicians. Mark has taken his research to musicology conferences across Canada and currently conducts workshops on performance anxiety for musicians at the University of New Brunswick.
As a violist, Mark currently plays for the cello-viola duo “Pallmer” with Emily Kennedy. Based in Fredericton, NB, the two perform concerts that flow between compositions and their own songwriting, creating ethereal soundscapes that offer moments of contentment, melancholy, and introspection. Mark has performed with regional orchestras in the West Michigan, Ottawa, and Florida Panhandle region.
